What are those noises from my basement ???

Alpine Heating and Cooling • September 21, 2021

As the temperatures drop and your furnace kicks on for the first time this year and begins it’s six month journey heating your home and keeping your family warm this winter you may hear noises you haven’t heard in awhile.

While it is difficult to diagnose an exact issue and repair needed going by the noise alone it can give you and your service tech a good starting point. Below is a list of a few of the noises you may hear coming from your
furnace and what the issue they may be linked to.

Grinding-
This is a telltale sign that you have a problem that needs addressed ASAP. More than likely your furnace has parts that are broken or loose and they are rubbing up against other parts. Don’t wait and give us a call as soon as you hear this sound. Additional damage and cost could add up if this is left unattended.

Rattling-
If you hear a ratting noise traditionally this is not a huge issue. It could be something as small as a loose screw or something needs tightened down. You will want to get to the bottom of the situation but typically not an emergency.

Whistling-
A whistling sound is almost always a sign that you have air flow restriction. The sound you hear is your furnace trying to draw air and move it where it can’t, which creates gaps. We recommend replacing your air filter as that clears up the issue most of the time. If you replace your filter and still hear the same sound. It’s probably time to give us a call.

Buzzing sounds-
Again, like the grinding this should be looked at by a professional ASAP. We’ve seen a numerous amount of these sounds end up as an electrical connection issue.

Banging or loud pops-
This sound often comes from your ductwork and typically happens when your furnace kicks on/off. This is pretty common as metal will expand and contract

Squealing noises-
Belts on furnace blowers just like the belts on your car will need replaced from time to time. As they begin to wear down you may hear that annoying whining or squealing noise. when your furnace kicks on/off.

This is not an all-inclusive list and when in doubt give us a call and we can dispatch one of our certified technicians to come out to diagnose and repair your
furnace issues and maybe at a price less than you expect.

Spring weather in Ohio can be unpredictable. Cool mornings, warm afternoons, and everything in between. That constant shift puts your HVAC system in a unique position, switching between heating and cooling more often than usual. In our last spring efficiency guide, we covered the basics like maintenance, filters, and thermostat settings. This time, we’re focusing on the things homeowners often overlook—small warning signs that can quietly impact comfort and efficiency. 1. Pay Attention to How Your System Sounds Your HVAC system should run relatively quietly. If you start hearing rattling, buzzing, banging, or whistling, it’s usually a sign something isn’t quite right. These noises can point to airflow restrictions, loose components, or early mechanical issues. Catching them early can prevent bigger (and more expensive) problems down the road. 2. Do Not Ignore Uneven Temperatures If one room feels perfect, another feels stuffy, and another never seems comfortable, your system may be struggling with airflow. Uneven temperatures can come from: -Ductwork issues -Airflow restrictions -Thermostat placement -System performance problems Many homeowners get used to it, but that doesn’t mean it’s normal—or that it should be ignored. 3. Watch for Early Warning Signs Spring is one of the best times to catch problems before your AC is working full-time. Some early warning signs include: -Longer run times -Weak airflow -Rising energy bills -Extra humidity -Musty smells when the system starts These issues rarely fix themselves. Addressing them now can save you from discomfort when summer hits. 4. Comfort Is About More Than Temperature A lot of homeowners judge their system by one thing: “Is it cool enough?” But real comfort includes: -Airflow -Humidity -Air freshness -Consistency from room to room -System noise If your home feels sticky, stale, or uneven—even if the temperature looks right—your system may not be performing as well as it should. Final Thoughts Spring is the perfect time to pay attention to how your system is actually performing—not just whether it turns on and off. Small issues tend to show up now before they turn into major problems later. Taking action early can improve comfort, reduce energy waste, and help your system run more reliably as temperatures rise. If something feels off, it’s worth having it looked at before the first stretch of hot weather hits. If you need service on your current HVAC system please give us a call and we'd be glad to begin the process of evaluating your needs along with your budget and coming up with a plan for your heating, cooling & air quality needs. TUESDAYS WITH THE TECH FINALE This week Bobby Schmitt from Apple Creek brings an end to our Tuesday's with the Tech Series. Thanks to everyone for taking the time to intereact each week and we hope to do this again in the future! 1. What’s one thing homeowners might not realize about heating & cooling? A: Home comfort is more about humidity than temperature, in the summer a whole home dehumidifier will keep your home comfortable without having to keep the temperature as low, and in the winter a humidifier will cause the home to still be comfortable at a lower temperature 2. Favorite State you’ve visited other than Ohio? A: North Carolina 3. Would you rather be chased by one angry goose or ten aggressive squirrels? A: One angry goose, having ten small things running around is hard to manage, one larger thing is more controllable. 4. What’s one piece of advice you’d give a homeowner to avoid breakdowns? A: Have maintenance done. Keep filters and the outdoor unit clean. 5. Remove One for the rest of your life… 1. Pizza 2. Cheeseburgers 3. Pasta A: Pasta. I’ve never been a big fan of Italian food. . . . #tuesdayswiththetech #alpine #heating #winter
