What are those noises from my basement ???

Alpine Heating and Cooling • September 21, 2021

As the temperatures drop and your furnace kicks on for the first time this year and begins it’s six month journey heating your home and keeping your family warm this winter you may hear noises you haven’t heard in awhile.

While it is difficult to diagnose an exact issue and repair needed going by the noise alone it can give you and your service tech a good starting point. Below is a list of a few of the noises you may hear coming from your
furnace and what the issue they may be linked to.

Grinding-
This is a telltale sign that you have a problem that needs addressed ASAP. More than likely your furnace has parts that are broken or loose and they are rubbing up against other parts. Don’t wait and give us a call as soon as you hear this sound. Additional damage and cost could add up if this is left unattended.

Rattling-
If you hear a ratting noise traditionally this is not a huge issue. It could be something as small as a loose screw or something needs tightened down. You will want to get to the bottom of the situation but typically not an emergency.

Whistling-
A whistling sound is almost always a sign that you have air flow restriction. The sound you hear is your furnace trying to draw air and move it where it can’t, which creates gaps. We recommend replacing your air filter as that clears up the issue most of the time. If you replace your filter and still hear the same sound. It’s probably time to give us a call.

Buzzing sounds-
Again, like the grinding this should be looked at by a professional ASAP. We’ve seen a numerous amount of these sounds end up as an electrical connection issue.

Banging or loud pops-
This sound often comes from your ductwork and typically happens when your furnace kicks on/off. This is pretty common as metal will expand and contract

Squealing noises-
Belts on furnace blowers just like the belts on your car will need replaced from time to time. As they begin to wear down you may hear that annoying whining or squealing noise. when your furnace kicks on/off.

This is not an all-inclusive list and when in doubt give us a call and we can dispatch one of our certified technicians to come out to diagnose and repair your
furnace issues and maybe at a price less than you expect.

If you’ve heard people talking about “new refrigerant rules” for air conditioners and heat pumps, you’re not alone. Homeowners are wondering if their current AC system is suddenly outdated or impossible to repair. The simple answer is no — you do not need to replace your air conditioner just because refrigerant rules have changed. What Changed With HVAC Refrigerants? The HVAC industry is moving away from higher-GWP refrigerants, including R-410A, and toward newer refrigerants with lower environmental impact. Under the EPA’s refrigerant transition rules, many new residential air conditioners and heat pumps manufactured after January 1, 2025 must use lower-GWP refrigerants. Existing systems can still be serviced, and parts used to repair existing systems are not subject to the same restrictions as new equipment. For homeowners, that means your current air conditioner or heat pump does not automatically need replaced. Can My Current AC Still Be Repaired? Yes. If your system uses R-410A, it can still be serviced. The bigger question is whether a repair makes financial sense. As older refrigerants become less common over time, certain repairs — especially refrigerant leak repairs — may become more expensive. That does not mean every older system should be replaced, but it does make the repair-versus-replace decision more important. When Should You Consider Replacing Your AC? You may want to consider replacement if: -Your system is over 10–15 years old -You are facing a major repair -Your AC has a refrigerant leak -Your energy bills keep climbing -Your home has uneven temperatures -Your system uses older equipment that is no longer under warranty If your system is newer, running well, and only needs a minor repair, replacement may not be necessary. Don’t Panic — Get Honest Advice The new refrigerant rules are a real change in the HVAC industry, but they should not be used to scare homeowners into replacing equipment before they need to. At Alpine Heating, Cooling, Plumbing & Refrigeration, we help homeowners understand their options clearly. Whether your system needs a simple repair, a refrigerant leak check, or a full replacement estimate, our goal is to give you honest information so you can make the best decision for your home.
